Residents in Ford City have had a coffee break with a cop.
Windsor police and the Ford City Residents in Action group held the first "Coffee with a Cop" event Wednesday morning.
A steady stream of residents visited the Gino and Liz Marcus Community Centre from 10am-12pm for a chance to chat one-on-one with Windsor police officers about issues in their neighbourhood.
Issues such as crime to a nosy neighbour to some residents wanting the same police officers patrolling their neighbourhood.
According to Windsor police stats, crime has dropped in the area from 376 incidents in 2012 to 224 incidents last year.
Ford City Residents In Action group secretary Cindy Newman says the event is about relationship building.
"To reconnect the citizens with the local police officers,"she says. "When I grew up we knew them by name, there is a disconnect now between knowing the officers and the citizens, they are random people with random faces now."
Windsor Police Inspector Jason Crowley says events like Coffee with a Cop encourage people to be more comfortable talking to police.
"It humanizes the police, it brings us closer to the community," says Inspector Crowley.
Windsor Police Chief Al Frederick says given the success of the first Coffee With A Cop event, he expects similar events will take place across the city.
