An initiative is underway to spruce up Windsor's crosswalks.
A number of community organizations are pushing for a program to have crosswalks painted to identify neighbourhoods and attractions throughout the city.
Sheila Wisdom is with the Windsor Symphony Orchestra and says cities like Toronto, London and Kitchener have begun doing this and are getting a positive response from the community.
Wisdom tells AM800 News it's all about community engagement.
"The idea is that groups come together, they identify a new way to interpret a crosswalk and that's something that's fun, it's whimsical, it's artistic, it has a design element to it and it just helps make a space some alive."
The crosswalks could be used as landmarks as well, he added.
"Something that tells people not very far from the Capitol Theatre is a Mediaplex, the Art Gallery has incredible art," says Wisdom. "If you see something on the road, you might now even know the gallery is there, especially if you're not local, but that might help you and make you want to cross the street and find out what's on the other side."
Wisdom says the intersections near the Capitol Theatre would be the perfect place to start.
"We've looked at near the Capitol Theatre, because it's the home of the symphony orchestra, actually having musical notes and is could be something from Beethoven's 9th Symphony and those people who actually know those notes the tune would be in their heads. So it's something that makes a space fun and interesting and appeals to people of all ages."
Wisdom is hoping to get the painted crosswalk initiative included in Windsor's 2019 budget with a goal of starting work next summer.
The program has been approved at the committee level and will now go before council for further discussion.
