A A local business has successfully blocked Unifor in a court proceeding.
Justice Jasminka Kalajdzic ruled in favour of Titan Tool and Die on Friday in issuing an interlocutory injunction against Unifor Local 195.
According to the Courts of Justice Act it will be in place for 10 days or until the case is concluded.
Its not clear however, if the court will continue to hear arguments on the Titan vs. Unifor as a request for the judge’s reasons was not returned Friday by the Superior Court in Windsor.
During Thursday’s hearing, the company said it needs to take tooling equipment back to its American owner, in light of the American tariffs.
Lawyers for Titan said they are contractually obligated to return the equipment to Toyo Seat USA because they paid for it to be used in the Windsor factory to stamp auto parts.
Union anticipates ‘more upheaval’
Unifor National President Lana Payne said they are disappointed by the court decision but vow to not give up their fight against the fallout of tariffs.
“The union position remains that any company that attempts to move jobs from Canada to the U.S. to appease Trump must face the harshest consequences possible,” Payne said in a statement to CTV News.
Since the threat of tariffs surfaced, Unifor has been warning companies in Canada will be forced to make “consequential decisions” as a result.
“Now that the U.S. has imposed tariffs on key Canadian industries, Unifor anticipates more upheaval in the near future,” she said.
Titan Tool & Die lawyers have not responded to a request for comment.
