Residents are asked to call 311 to book an appointment

Windsor will soon begin bulk furniture pickups.

Residents can now call 311 and book an appointment to pick-up couches, tables or mattresses.

Appliances will not be picked up as they can be dropped off for free at the public depot.

Manager of Environmental Services  Anne Marie Albidone says the city will charge a $20 fee per item and there is a maximum of two items per collection date.

Under the program, each of the city's pickup zones will see one collection cycle for bulk items per month.

She expects a lot of residents will take advantage of it.

"I think at the beginning it is certainly going to be popular," she says. "This is something that our residents have been asking for, for a long time and it is really something that council embraced and said it is time that we do this."

When residents call 311, they will be given a date to have the items on the curb.

Albidone encourages people with gently used furniture to call local charities if the items can still be used.

The collections begin in June.
