St. Louis Catholic Elementary in Leamington will be expanded to add additional space for students and child care.

St. Louis Catholic Elementary in Leamington will be expanded to add additional space for students and child care.

The announcement was made Friday by Trevor Jones, MPP for Chatham-Kent--Leamington, and Ontario Education Minister Stephen Lecce.

Jones says the province has provided $7.6-million in funding to the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board.

"Once completed, this project will deliver an additional 147 elementary student places, 63 childcare spaces, with three new child care rooms. All to support local families right here in Leamington."

Education Minister Stephen Lecce says affordable and accessible childcare and modern schools that are available for the next generation of children is a good story.

"We just signed a deal with the federal government, materially better deal that allows us to cut fees by 50% this year. Roughly $6,000 to $10,000 per child per year, in addition to reducing fees further down to $10 by 2025."

Lecce added the province recently introduced legislation to better schools and student outcomes with an emphasis on refocusing the system on academic achievement, "And of course on ensuring that parents have sufficient voice within the system of education, and ultimately that literacy and math skills and STEM education and the full development of well rounded leaders are able to take hold in our publicly funded schools."

Lecce says the expansion is on track for completion by this December.
