A Walkerville business owner is hoping city council will approve a zoning change.
Balraj Jhawar, owner of Gourmet Emporium has applied for the business to be changed from "restaurant and lounge" to "entertainment lounge."
Because the business operates as more of an entertainment lounge on weekends, it hasn't been operating in compliance with current zoning.
One Walkerville reisident who opposes the change says "any sound transmission that results from any loud music that's being played is immediatley evident in all of the adjacent properties and it definitely has an impact on the residential uses. Without a doubt, music is played until after 2:00."
Property owner Baljraj Jhawar says "we did have a problem in 2013 and 2014 and I can tell you that it was directly due to the fact that we had outdoor speakers. Those were removed with no intention of replacing them. This past year 2016, as of August, we had zero noise complaints."
Gourmet Emporium has occupied the historic Bank of Montreal Building at 1799 Wyandotte St east since 2007. The city's planning committee has approved the recommended zoning change and city council will have final say at a future meeting.
