First-year medical students at the University of Windsor had a little fun while getting to know their way around the city.
Windsor's campus of Western University’s Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry is smaller, but that doesn't mean students don't get an orientation.
Four teams faced off in "Family Feud" style challenge, where students were asked to answer questions on cancer screening and prevention.
Many of the students will be in Windsor for the first time, and Dr. John Day says the competition, which includes a scavenger hunt, will help them get familiar with the community.
"It teaches the medical students about cancer screening and prevention," says Day. "We add the extra events like the scavenger hunts and some of the community activities to try to show off the city of Windsor to students who might not be from the region."
Day says the experience is a friendly competition.
"We divided the students into four teams and they have a round by round play down with questions about cancer screening and prevention," he says. " It's done in the style of the old game show The Family Feud."
He told AM800 News, the day is meant to be a fun teaching moment.
"They can get an experience of taking that out into the public," he says. "It's actually very different for them to interact with someone in public as opposed to a private patient, which is their normal experience."
Students gathered for an awards ceremony at The Foundry Pub in downtown Windsor to wrap-up the day.
