It's been a year since 16 people were killed and 13 others were injured after the Humboldt Broncos' bus collided with a semi driven by a novice truck driver who blew through a stop sign.

A memorial service is being held with a moment of silence at the exact moment lives were taken and changed forever at 4:50pm MT., 6:50pm ET.

The deadly crash touched the hearts of Canadians and people around the world who put hockey sticks on their front porches in solidarity with the Humboldt community — also donating more than $15-million for the victims' families.

Humboldt arena will be the site of the service led by the team's pastor surrounded by rows of yellow banners with the names of all 29 people who were on the bus that day.

Close to 3,000 people are expected to fill the arena and many more may visit the crash site at the crossing of Highways 35 and 335.

The team was heading to a playoff game when the collision happened, the site is now covered with memorials to those who died.

Jaskirat Singh Sidhu of Calgary was sentenced last month to eight years for dangerous driving causing death and bodily injury.

All three prairie provinces have made training mandatory for commercial truck drivers and an entry-level national training standard is to be in place next year.

Singh Sidhu told the court he had little experience and was unfamiliar with area roadways.

CTV News will broadcast the memorial beggining at 6:30pm Eastern Standard Time.
