The president of Unifor Local 444 is happy Fiat Chrysler is investing in a new assembly plant in Detroit.
Reports indicate the company plans to reopen a former engine plant on the city's east side to build a new Jeep Grand Cherokee with three rows of seats.
Dave Cassidy admits it was shocking at first, but the fact the company is investing in North America is positive news.
"The fact of the matter is, when we have over-capacity and we need to build other facilities, that's a good thing," says Cassidy.
He says the union has a meeting with the new company President Mike Manley in the new year.
"We are pushing the product in Brampton, we are pushing for the product in Windsor. They know what Canada can do so it's a good thing that FCA is growing."
He admits a new assembly plant close by may have a positive impact in Canada.
"We already supply parts to Jefferson North and if the other plant opens up and they estimate 1,800 to 2,000 employees, they are going to need parts. They are going to need parts for that other vehicle."
According to the Detroit News, the new assembly plant would build the new Jeep Grand Cherokee for the model year 2021.
The former Mack Avenue Engine II facility has been closed since 2012.
