Matt Olson hit a two-run homer and Jed Lowrie drove in three runs to lead the A's to an 8-3 win over the Tigers in the first of a three-game series at Comerica Park. Marcus Semien went 2-for-5 and scored three runs for Oakland, which has won nine of its last 12 games.
Liam Hendriks got his fourth win out of the bullpen. Starter Jharel Cotton was scratched with a groin strain.
Buck Farmer gave up five runs in less than three innings to fall to 4-and-4 with the loss. Nicholas Castellanos went 3-for-4 and Ian Kinsler homered and knocked in two for Detroit.
Tigers reliever Jeff Ferrell appears to be okay after getting struck in the side of the head with a line drive last night against the A's. It happened in the eighth inning off the bat of Oakland's Ryon Healy. Ferrell never fell to the ground, but jogged straight toward the dugout. He went to the hospital for a CT scan, but was alert and responsive.
