Anthony Mantha scored Detroit's only goal late in the third period, with assists from Nick Jenson in his NHL debut and Henrik Zetterberg.
Wings goalie Jimmy Howard had to be helped off the ice in the second period after a collision and did not return to the game. Howard turned aside 15 of 16 shots and his replacement Petr Mrazek stopped 12 of the 15 shots he faced.
The Red Wings wrap up a three-game road trip against the Panthers on Friday.
