Tecumseh fire crews were called to the playground shortly before 6pm on Tuesday.
Captain Larry Morand says upon arrival, thick black smoke was seen coming from the structure and flames were about six to eight feet high.
He says the playground has a rubber base.
"This is a special flooring for special needs children so that there's no injury that the town had purchased years ago," says Morand. "So what happens is because it's a hydrocarbon fire, in order for us to make sure the fire is extinguished we blanket it with foam."
Morand says it took about 12 minutes to put out the blaze.
He adds the investigation is now in the hands of the OPP.
Damage is pegged at $400,000.
No injuries were reported.
