A bridge at St. Clair College will be named after the late Senior Constable John Atkinson.
LaSalle Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to named the St. Clair Drive Bridge after the Windsor police officer who died in the line of duty in May 2006.
Town council was approached by the Windsor Police Services Board to honour Atkinson as one end of the bridge is in LaSalle and the other end is in Windsor.
"I knew John well," says LaSalle Councillor Mike Akpata. "Actually on my first date I went with my wife, we bumped into John and his wife Shelley and it chokes me up every time I think about him. So I'm pleased that he will be memorialized like the 254 officers who have been killed in the line in duty by having a structure named after him."
Akpata says Atkinson went to St. Clair College.
Atkinson was shot and killed while he investigated a drug deal at Pillette and Seminole.
