A trustee with the Greater Essex County District School Board would like to see new life given to Windsor Stadium.
Alan Halberstadt has asked for a report on what needs to be done to bring the stadium back to its former glory.
The facility at 2365 McDougall St. next to Jackson Park is currently being used by nearby Kennedy high school as a practice field, but Halberstadt believes there's a lot more potential.
He says the place used to be packed for high school football games.
"It's was built in the 1920's and needs a lot of repair. There's very little use of it now. It used to be a stadium where you would have 4,000 people for a triple-header of high school football games during the year, but the stadium can't hold up anymore," says Halberstadt.
He says there are a number of aspects that need to be looked at.
"I think it's time that we take a look at upgrades for the stadium. Right now, it's not getting a lot of use and it's a big asset. The grandstand has been there forever and the turf itself, there's people that would like to put an artificial turf in there that would actually hold up a lot better," says Halberstadt.
He says grant funding needs to be explored as well.
"It won't get improved without money and there's indications that money might be available," says Halberstadt. "This is all premature, but are we going to just leave it the way it is? Or are we going to try to do what I believe is proper and try to bring it up to modern standards."
Halberstadt's motion will be discussed at the public board's regular meeting Tuesday night.
In 2016, the Windsor AKO Fratmen organization unveiled a $10-million plan to restore the stadium — that ultimately the plan fell through.
