Kingsville Councillor Sandy McIntyre's seat has officially been declared vacant.
Due to personal reasons, McIntyre resigned August 14 and Mayor Nelson Santos says the town now has to figure out the best way to replace her.
Santos says there's two options, appoint a new councillor or hold a byelection, which would cost the town about $55,000.
He says if they choose to appoint, there's a couple of ways to do it.
"One is, we appoint a member from the results of the previous election and the other option, through the appointment bylaw, is then to also hold a call for applications and then we would go through a process almost like an interview process."
Santos says runner-ups from the previous election have expressed interest in being appointed.
"The sixth position was John Dreidger and after that it was Gary Bain. We know they're watching council's decision. They know it's a tough decision that council needs to make, but they are definitely, I believe, interested in coming back to close out the balance of this term."
He adds, they'd like to get someone in place sooner than later.
"The earliest that a candidate from a byelection would come to council would be near the end of February next year. Whereas, an appointment we'd be able to bring the candidate in much earlier. If we're looking at trying to fill the seat and have a full table of seven members of council the appointment process is one that I think would be more appetizing for our community."
Kingsville Council will make a decision on how to proceed at its September 11 meeting.
The next municipal election takes place October 22, 2018.
