A recent string of armed-robberies — some of which involving a customer confronting a suspect — has Windsor police reminding people to be safe.
Sergeant Steve Betteridge told AM800 News every situation is unique, but if there's any other way, do not confront an armed-robber.
"Absolutely not worth anyone's life to ever put yourself in a situation of danger," he says. "There have been cases, from time to time, do not ever put yourself in harms way."
Betteridge says give them what they want and get them out as soon as possible. Things can be replace, people can't.
"If it's an employee on duty, they're the ones who are usually confronted," says Betteridge. "Our message is, just comply with whatever they're asking for. Give them what they want and get them out as quickly, and as safely as possible."
If escape isn't an option, he says the best way to help police is to keep your eyes and ears open.
"Contact 911 with as much descriptive information as possible," he says. "A physical description, size, age, and weight. If there was a vehicle involved, a licence plate if you can, even if it's a bicycle, a description of it. If they're on foot, try and get a last direction of travel."
Betteridge says anyone not being directly confronted, should flee and call 911 if it's safe to do so — there is never a scenario where police would prefer a citizen risk injury.
He applauded the efforts of employees at Shoppers Drug Mart to get people out of danger during Saturday's armed-robbery.
