Transit Windsor is getting a financial boost from the federal government.
$10.3-million has been announced to help upgrade and repair infrastructure.
The City of Windsor has also set aside matching funding in the 2017 budget.
Just over $6.2-million of the federal cash will be used for 24 new, clean diesel buses.
Executive Director Pat Delmore says older buses are more expensive to maintain. "Early in 2018, we will see 24 new buses rolling through the streets and we will be retiring our 24 oldest buses, which is really exciting. It is helping us to update our fleet so that we can follow our plan which is to have a newer, cleaner fleet that will help the environment as well."
"We know that having an older fleet costs more to repair parts, try to find the part," says Delmore. So city council supported transit moving forward with a plan that would see our buses replaces every 12 years. Right now it's approximately about every 18. So it's going to mean a newer fleet."
Tecumseh and Leamington also received funding to support public transit efforts.
Ottawa is investing nearly $1.5-billion on transit infrastructure across the country.
