When Grade 7 and 8 students move into the new Cardinal Carter Middle School, they may have a new gym to use.
The Windsor-Essex Catholic School board has given the green light for the $3.5 million project pending the approval from the Ministry of Education.
The school will see Grade 7 and 8's from Queen of Peace move into the high school in the fall.
Superintendent Gary McKenzie says the new Cardinal Carter Middle School is in need of some space for the new students.
"Sevens and eights will be moving into Cardinal Carter and form Cardinal Carter Middle School," says McKenzie. "Because of the increase in population we are adding a small gym to the building and renovating some rooms to make room for the sevens and eights.
He says with classrooms shifting around, the gym is not the school's only need moving forward.
"We will need new classrooms for the Middle school," says McKenzie. "We will be moving a construction technology classroom to another area of the building as well. It will be in a brand new area, so it will look really good when it is done."
The project comes in nearly $300,000 under budget according to the report presented to the board.
McKenzie says the leftover money will allow for some improvements in other areas of the district.
"We have reviewed the project, we have worked with our architect in the schools and we have seen that we do no require to use that full amount of money," says McKenzie. "We will be able to use that money on another project that can use the envelope."
Construction is expected to take up to seven months, and will begin once the Ministry of Education gives final approval.
