Francesco Molinai wins the Open Championship by two stokes at eight under

Francesco Molinari has won the British Open after emerging from a crowded pack in a wild final round at Carnoustie.

Molinari shot a bogey-free, 2-under 69 to finish 8-under 276. It's his first major title.

The win caps a stunning stretch for the 15th-ranked Italian, who has won on the PGA and European Tours in the previous two months.

Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose, Xander Schauffele and Kevin Kisner finished in a tie for second place, two shots behind Francesco Molinari.

Tiger Woods, who briefly took the lead on Sunday, shot a 71 and was 5 under overall.

Molinari became the first Italian to win a major championship. Americans have won the previous five.
