Members of the Mayor's Youth Leadership Team have officially completed their training and are ready to represent the city.
After a year of training in the areas of hospitality and tourism, members of the team received their uniform blazers and certificates Thursday evening.
The ceremony was held at the WFCU Centre where Mayor Drew Dilkens presented members with their certificates.
The team's purpose is to interact with visitors in a positive way and help answer questions they may have about the city.
Dilkens says he hopes the team encourages others to get involved in the community.
"The young leaders that step forward already show immense leadership qualities," says Dilkens. "They are the type A people who want to get out and participate and be a part of their community...Certainly when I go out and I talk to young people at schools I tell them to please get active in your community."
Dilkens says the young volunteers will be Windsor's representatives for many major events.
"They have learned to deal with people with different backgrounds and cultures and what to expect," says Dilkens. "These folks here are really going to be in a lot of ways the frontline people our guests see when they come to the city of Windsor for FINA and other events."
Dilkens says out of 250 people that applied, 50 were accepted and 46 graduated.
"They started down a path, they completed the path, they are coming out the other end and they really have an important role," says Dilkens. "Although it is a volunteer role and they are not going to get rich doing it, it really is an important role."
The team's first task will be to greet guests at the 13th FINA World Swimming Championships, to be held December 6th to the 11th.
