The local chapter of Cystic Fibrosis Canada is raising awareness of its upcoming walk.
It held its first ever kick-off and information night at Gourmet Emporium.
The event heard from 17-year-old Emma Chenier who was diagnosed with CF when she was seven months old. CF is a fatal genetic disease that has no cure and affects mostly the digestive system and lungs.
Chenier says it means a lot for 'CF warriors' to get the support.
"You know individuals siblings, friends, family that have it and to me that really means having something every year that I know that will have support that I can count on being there for me and knowing that the community cares is really important," says Chenier. "Having that support coming out is really great and when we bring that information into the community and spreading the awareness of what CF is and how it affects individuals and people around the person with the disease, it is very important because you never know when you are going to be affected with it in your life."
The life expectancy for someone with CF is 51.8. One in every 3,600 born in Canada has Cystic Fibrosis.
The 'Walk to Make Cystic Fibrosis History' takes place on Sunday, May 28 at the Vollmer Recreation Complex.
