The Town of LaSalle is Canada's safest community.
According to Statistics Canada, out of the 321 communities that submit police statistics, four local communities were in the top 20 for 2018.
LaSalle Police Service Community Relations Officer Sr. Constable Terry Seguin says they've been there in the past.
He says the Crime Severity Index is more than just the number of calls police respond to.
"They rank them based on a formula and this year we were the number one safest community in the country," he says. "As well, we have consistently remained near the top over the last quite a number of years."
Constable Seguin says a number of factors point to why the town is so safe.
"It just speaks volumes to the quality of the officers that are responding to the crimes, the quality of partnerships that we've created within the community and the quality of the citizens themselves. It's a great community out here, great people."
He says part of the success may also be that police in the town reach out to people after they've had an involvement with an officer.
"We've been doing this about 12 years to contact about 450 residents per year to ask them how their interaction with a police officer went," says Constable Seguin. "We want to know if there's anything we could do to improve our service and generally we get a 99% satisfaction rating from the people that we survey."
The Town of Essex was ranked number seven, Lakeshore was 17 and Amherstburg came in at number 20.
Meanwhile in Windsor, the crime severity Index jumped 21% in 2018, compared to the previous year.
According to the data, there was an increase in both violent and non-violent crimes.
Most notably, there were 10 murder investigations in the city in 2018 and a jump in the number of break-ins.
