GFL Environmental Inc. to continue collecting garbage in Lakeshore

It's status quo for garbage pick-up in the Municipality of Lakeshore.
During Tuesday's meeting, council approved a three year Solid Waste Collection Contract to Green for Life Environmental Inc. in the amount of nearly $3-million.
GFL Environmental Inc. is the company that currently picks up waste in the municipality, while the Essex-Windsor Solid Waste Authority provides recycling services.
In 2023 there was interest in a regional waste collection program, however it wasn't supported by local municipalities. Due to that process, a Request for Tender for garbage collection in Lakeshore was pushed back.
Lakeshore's existing waste collection contract expired on December 31.
This contract with GFL Environmental Inc. will be for January 1, 2024 to December 31, 2026, with an opportunity to extend the contract for two, one-year extensions.
Once Ontario's mandatory organics program begins in 2025, council will discuss the reduction of collection to bi-weekly waste collection.
Council has also approved to eliminate the extra pick up in Area 3, to save $66,700, which will be revisited once the organics program rolls out.
GFL Environmental Inc. picks up waste at 15,618 households in the Municipality.
