A fire at the WFCU Centre in East Windsor has caused $1-million in damage.

Flames could be seen on the roof of the building at 8787 McHugh Street along with black smoke around 10 a.m. Monday morning.

The building was evacuated including about 80 people who were in the pool area, according to one swimmer who spoke with AM800 news.

As a precaution, all programming at the WFCU Centre has been cancelled until noon Tuesday.

The WFCU Centre is a polling station for the federal election, so equipment was relocated to St. Joseph's Catholic high school on Clover Ave.

12 Windsor Fire and Rescue vehicles and 55 fire personnel were on scene including one who suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

An investigation is underway to determine cause but the fire damaged a number of solar panels and roofing material.

Acting Chief Fire Prevention Officer John Smith says the search for a cause is underway.  "Right now it's under investigation. We're suspecting possible solar panels as there's over 100 solar panels on the roof that have been involved in the fire at this time, that we know of."

Smith says the power has been cut to the building so it will be closed for a period of time.

"We had to get a few aerial trucks up, I think we had 3 of the 4 aerial trucks here, up to almost 55 fire personnel but they eventually got it under control quickly and minimized the damage to the roof. It appears nothing entered inside the building at this time, early indications are we're ok inside. It's just we have to get the power back on to the structure.

McHugh St. has reopened.
