The 2016 FINA World Swimming Championships have come to a close. Six days of competition that put Windsor in the world spotlight have wrapped up at the WFCU Centre.
Peter Knowles, the executive director of the local organizing committee, couldn't be happier with how things turned out. "We've got 1,500 rooms for accommodation, 100 vehicles on the road, probably our attendance will be about 25,000 I think over the six days -- 165 countries, 1,000 athletes, another 1,000 delegates for the convention - and economic benefit probably $25-$30 million. That wraps up an impressive event for the City of Windsor."
Among the estimated 25,000 spectators was Amherstburg resident Makayla Porter. ""It was awesome. It was almost sureal seeing all the people you basically seen at the Olympics. It was really cool to actually see them here. Hopefully it brings more kids and more people into the sport. It's a big thing."
Knowles describes the championship as a once-in-a-lifetime experience that those involved will never forget.
