Essex Councillor Sherry Bondy wants more public input before the town revamps its ward structure.
A decision has to be made in December on whether to split Ward 1 into two wards, or maintain the current ward structure, but allow Ward 1 to have two seats on council.
Bondy says only 40 residents answered the call for public input, not enough to make an informed decision.
She told AM800 News the town needs to slow down and think things through.
A report brought to council Tuesday says both options would be effective models for the town, but Bondy isn't sure they're the only possible solutions. "I'm not convinced the consultants have brought forward every alignment of the wards that's going to work for our municipality. There's more to Essex then representation by populations."
"I'm really looking to council and saying is there another line we want to draw, do we want to take a step back," says Bondy. Another concern of mine is I really feel we're rushing it."
The report says public input is valuable, but it's not relied on exclusively — once a decision has been made, public opinion is not a basis to reverse a decision.
A copy of the final report can be found on the town website.
