Essex Councillor Randy Voakes wants to know why several children in his ward now have to brave the elements to get to school.
Several Ward 1 residents approached Voakes for support, prompting him to bring a notice of motion to the town to investigate the issue.
He says lots of kids have to walk to school, but he doesn't understand why several children in one neighbourhood no longer have a ride when nearby students are being picked up every-day. "I'm not a fool to argue that when somebody right beside the same child that's being left behind, a senior child in Grade 8, he's being picked up and bused to school while the six-year-old has to walk more than 1-mile to school in -30F weather."
Residents have also told Voakes there are empty seats on many of the buses daily, but he says he'll wait until speaking to administrators before jumping to any conclusions. "From what I understand, and this is what I want to ask talk to them about, there's 27-empty-seats on a bus that goes right by their house," says Voakes.
Voakes says if there are any empty seats on school buses, they should be filled with children, especially in bad weather.
The issue will be brought to the town council later this month.
