Windsor West MPP Lisa Gretzky's private member legislation on home and hospice care has passed second reading and will move onto standing committee.
The legislation known as "Dan's Law" would eliminate the three-month waiting period for coverage in Ontario for home and hospice care services for people moving to the province.
It is specifically for former Ontarians moving back to the province for end of life care or those moving here to be with loved ones at that time.
Gretzky says hospital care averages 10-times as costly as home or hospice care, adding "the argument that by allowing those who have previously lived in Ontario or from another province or territory that want to come to Ontario to spend time with family is not more expensive. That's not an accurate depiction of what the cost is."
Dan Duma had worked at the GM plant in Windsor, but when it closed he took a job out of province.
When he was diagnosed with a terminal illness he moved back to Windsor only to discover the three-month wait for coverage of home care or hospice care.
Members of the Duma family were at Queen's Park for the vote.
