The City of Windsor has decided to review its current sign bylaw to set guidelines for future LED and digital signs.
Monday night, city council denied a request from Pattison Outdoor Advertising to erect a digital sign on Walker Rd.
Council was worried digital signs on major roads could distract drivers.
Urban Designer Adam Coates says says the city will look to other municipalities for advice. "We will be studying other municipalities, so we will be doing a cross reference to other municipalities and policies that they already have in place. As well as other government bodies, such as the MTO and the federal government to see what they have in place regarding LED signs. Not just billboards but also for facial wall signs for businesses and third party advertising."
"There is a lot of information that needs to be taken into account when conducting the review," says Coates. "We will look at how bright they are, hours of operation, third party, second party advertising requirements, size requirements and transition and animation. So it could be static images that just transition every couple of seconds or it could actually be full motion animation video."
The review is expected to take a year.
