Officials at Windsor Regional Hospital say local cancer patients need not worry after chemotherapy drug shortages in the Toronto area.
Vice President of Patient Relations Monica Staley-Liang says the supply of drugs in Windsor-Essex is enough to handle appointments with another shipment expected March 13.
She says Windsor Regional has been proactively working with Cancer Care Ontario.
"However, along with Cancer Care Ontario, things can change depending on the provincial and national supplies. We are collaborating with CCO to stay on top of it and make sure that we know who to reach out to and that's what we're doing," says Staley-Liang.
She says there's plenty of behind the scenes work taking place as well.
"At this point in our region, we do have the supply and we're getting another delivery next week. We're working with our provincial partners to make sure that we address any issues that may arise. We can reassure them, at this point, we're ok." says Staley-Liang.
She says Cancer Care Ontario was notified about the shortage March 1.
"Since that time, March 2 to current, they have been working with Health Canada and our suppliers to address and make sure that we have adequate supply in all our regional centres across the province. Currently we're ok at this time with our supplies," says Staley-Liang.
Chemotherapy treatments have been cancelled for dozens of patients in the Greater Toronto Area after Health Canada quarantined drug shipments for an investigation into leaking and cracked vials.
