The 15th annual Cans for A Cause has come to a close this holiday season.
Volunteers joined on air personalities from AM800, 93.9 The River and 89X at Devonshire Mall Friday for the last leg of the annual food drive.
More than 5,500 non-perishable food items and $5,100 were gathered for Society St. Vincent de Paul this year.
Society Vice-President Bernie Amlin says, "this is stuff that we didn't have and we'll have now to share with our families in need," he says. "It's been a great day and we're very appreciative of everybody's help."
He says every little bit counts because people go hungry in Windsor-Essex year round.
"Last year we did 7,900 visits, over 43,000 people that we assisted through our food banks and our home visits. This food is very important for us to be able to continue our way through the whole year," he says. "I want to thank all the people that came out and supported us and just wish everyone a merry Christmas and a happy New Year," he added.
Cans for a Cause has collected more than 100,000 non-perishable food items and more than $30,000 for Society St. Vincent de Paul.
Amlin says the organization takes donations year round and will pick up items to make it more convenient for anyone who wants to give.
