The Knobby’s Kids program continues to give to families in need.
This was made possible thanks to the St. Clair College Alumni Association and its annual $5,000 donation earlier this month.
Knobby’s Kids gives local youth hockey skates, equipment and free ice time at Lanspeary Park every Saturday.
Kim Davis is the president of the Alumni Association and says it's a great program with many benefits.
"Hockey teaches kids very valuable lessons. They learn about team work and loyalty and showing up on time, working together. It's an activity we've enjoyed sponsoring every year."
She says it plays a valuable role in the community.
"It's an interesting demographic because there are lower income inner city kids who might not have the opportunity, if they weren't able to enjoy the ice for free. The parents might not be able to afford to get skates or hockey equipment and pay for ice time. Skating around with smiles on their faces, and it doesn't matter how cold it is, they show up every Saturday. They just love it out there and they really do keep the ice really well maintained and the whole arena very well maintained."
The program was named after the late Robert “Knobby” Knudsen who was a local athlete and sports supporter in the community.
The St. Clair College Alumni Association has been donating to the program since 2012.
