The University of Windsor already has a plan in place for a new law school building after it was announced funding for a move downtown has been pulled.
Money that was promised by the previous government to renovate the Paul Martin Building on the corner of Pitt St. W. and Ouellette Ave. was axed by the Doug Ford led PC's Friday morning.
Interim President and current Vice Chancellor Douglas Kneale says the move didn't come as a surprise.
"There are a lot of pieces to this puzzle in terms of the funding that would have been required for the university to take on such a large project and it's been on again and off again for different reasons," he says. "Obviously a new government came in with different priorities."
Back in May the Wynne Liberal government quietly committed $20-million to move the Faculty of Law and its 600 students from the University of Windsor into the historic building.
Kneale wouldn't confirm a location, but he tells AM800 News a new law building is coming.
"It's safe to say, that given this announcement we will not be proceeding with the Paul Martin Building, but we are hoping to have a very exciting announcement to make soon," says Kneale.
Outgoing University of Windsor President Alan Wildeman announced the university was pulling out of plans to take over the Paul Martin building due to the lack of financial support back in August of 2017.
