The province announced the program for those in the fight against COVID19 Saturday

A pay increase is on the way for frontline staff in the fight against COVID-19 in Ontario.

The temporary pandemic payment was announced Saturday and will see a $4 increase on top of front line workers' regular hourly wage, according to the province.

In a release, officials say the increase is in,"recognition of the dedication, long hours and increased risk of working to contain the COVID-19 outbreak."

Employees working over 100 hours per month will also receive lump sum payments of $250 per month for each of the next four months under the program.

Eligible employees working an average of 40 hours per week will receive a total of $3,560 in additional compensation.

Staff working in long-term care homes, retirement homes, emergency shelters, supportive housing, social services congregate care settings, corrections institutions and youth justice facilities, as well as those providing home and community care and some staff in hospitals qualify for the temporary benefit.
