The trial of the Shores of Erie Wine Festival over liquor license act offences is underway.
2 days had been set aside for the proceeding but with a change in the prosecutor it's expected to take significantly longer.
The charges were laid after the death of 18-year-old Emily Bernauer, who was killed in a car crash after volunteering at a booth at the festival.
The first witness was a friend of Bernauer who was also volunteering at the Sobeys booth the same night September 6, 2014.
Ann-Marie Carosella was of legal drinking age at the time.
She told court she and Bernauer were never asked for ID when entering the festival grounds or when they were buying tokens for alcoholic drinks.
She also testified the owner of the Sobeys store did not accurately check the age of every volunteer before handing out the bracelets indicating a person was of age.
She says Rennie Rota only asked the group of volunteers: "you're all 19, right?"
Carosella also testified she saw Bernauer's car at the Sobeys store lot when they went back there on a break.
She commented that the volunteers were not supposed to drive home.
Bernauer told Carosella her parents were going to come to pick her up and take her back the next day because she had a shift at the store.
Other volunteers from the booth are going on the stand today and tomorrow.
Justice of the Peace Michael Hurst has asked the lawyers to determine how long the trial will take and arrange dates, likely next year, for the matter to continue.
