The Kids First Food Bank at the Windsor Homes Coalition has been forced to close because its shelves are bare.
There has been an increase in the number of people using the service, last October there were just over 600 clients for the entire month, that number for October of this year has jumped to 90 per day.
The food bank is open four times a week for 2.5 hours.
In the first hour-and-a-half they were open today, 62 people including children and families came through their doors.
"Last year at this time, we were doing about 650 per month, we are seeing four times a week, 90 plus people a day," says Executive Director Angela Yakonich.
She says keeping the food bank open with sparce shelves isn't fair for its clients.
"With the Food Bank Association, the Windsor-Essex Food Bank Association, people are allowed to visit over the course of two months three food banks, we don't want to give somebody a bag of pasta and a jar of pasta sauce and then risk the fact that they won't be able to visit another food bank this month and they are not getting enough to get through the three days."
The food bank is looking for immediate, emergency donations so it can re-open.
Currently there is a high need for the following: canned meats, peanut butter, canned fruits and vegetables, Kraft Dinner, cereal, school snacks, crackers etc.
Monetary donations are incredibly helpful as the agency is able to purchase fresh fruits, vegetables and meat for their clients.
